thaw fashion show – pop up shop

Friday, May 6th, 2011

I was delighted to participate in the annual Thaw Fashion Show, featuring a live auction and a pop-up shop of independent designers. The event is a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the Hungtington’s Disease Society of America. Each year the show is located in a different industrial space in the SoDo: this time in a loft-like unfinished penthouse with sweeping views of downtown Seattle.    Guests were treated to great food, drinks and music by DJ Darek Mazzone and performances by Mad Rad and Champagne Champagne.

california dreaming: coping methods for winter weather

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

As much as I love living in Seattle, our winters tend to be gloomy, soggy, and drag on for-ev-er.   Today?  It hailed AND snowed. My preferred remedy during the slow season is to escape to a sunny locale. Unfortunately, this year I’ve got so many bags in the works, I can’t pry myself away from my sewing machine anytime soon.

So, I thought I’d share two favorite new methods to cope:

  1. Rock this NPR playlist “ Beyond California Dreaming”
  2. Design a virtual sunny-weather outfit on Polyvore, using their huge library of all sorts of fashionable awesomeness.
  3. However, if you’re one of the lucky bastards people to be in southern California right now – go check out Mixture in North Little Italy in San Diego.  You’ll be immediately smitten by open loft-like space, adorned with modern furniture and accessories.. .and some great handbags.

p.s. What are your winter-weather coping methods? Please share them in the comments section below. (And if you’ve created some outfits with a Crystalyn Kae bag on Polyvore, please post a link!)

needle felting with Moxie

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Moxie is a Seattle-based self-taught fiber artist who creates clever sculptures with wool: in her own words, she “likes to make wool do impossible things.”   I recently took a private class at her studio to learn needle-felting.

Her organized and quirky workspace was accessorized with  metal lunch boxes, doll heads and numerous felting tools that looked a bit dangerous.  Moxie enthusiastically demonstrated how repeatedly punching through a bundle of  wool roving with a barbed needle, will cause the fiber attach to itself.  After a few minutes of ‘stabbing’ it turns from a fluffy blob to a very firm-to-the touch 3D object.  It was like magic. No water, no heat, just lots of patience.

While we worked on our projects, I asked her to share a few of her favorite sites: Craftzine ,  Make and Meaning, and Kung Fu Grippe.  She also gave me a list of her favorite musicians to listen to while crafting: Jonathan Coulton, Richard Cheese, The Who, The Tigerlilies, and the Mills Brothers.

Most excitingly, Moxie has an instructional needle-felting book coming out soon!  In the meantime you can find  her marvelous sculptures in gallery exhibitions, local workshops, and of course Etsy.

Update: 12/2010:  The wait is over:  Moxie’s book “I Felt Awesome:Tips and Tricks for 35+ Needle-Poked Projects”  You can purchase your very own copy on Amazon or in Moxie’s etsy shop.

bumbershoot – music!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

This weekend, we braved the elements for 3 days at Bumbershoot (there’s a reason they call it that!) and discovered a ton of great new music.  Some of the best shows were  extra-special: my husband won passes in a OneReel contest to watch live performances in the Secret KEXP Music Lounge! I loved the intimate venue, and the voyeur in me enjoyed watching the bands warm up before the live radio shows would start.  (You can listen to many of the shows streaming live on KEXP’s website.)

 Here are my top picks:

Most Dapper Showmen (and woman)Raphael Saadiq at KEXP Secret Lounge. The men wore fantastically tailored suits, and had their act down to a perfect polished science.  The sound was Smokey Robinson-esque R& B: smooth and swanky. Check out these videos to see them in action.

Best Folk Rock-outCave Singers at KEXP Secret Lounge

Perhaps these guys weren’t as easy on the eyes as Raphael and crew, but these 3 guys held their own by making the most incredible music journey of the weekend. The lead singers raspy voice was a perfect complement to the lovely guitar, and in-between song banter had the audience in comfortable chuckles.  These guys were so good, we saw them for a second time in the outdoor stage later on that day, and purchased their album as soon as returned home from Bumbershoot.

Most amazing live show I’ve seen this year: Franz Ferdinand at Memorial Stadium Mainstage

Franz Ferdinand is the type of band that you crank the stereo until your ears bleed, and sing at the top of your lungs.  And this show was the ultimate chance to literally feel the music vibrate in your ribcage and dance like a crazy person.  They jumped on top of speakers and pounded drums. The crowd freaked. Security was hosing crowd-surfers down with water.  Franz Ferdinand closed with what seemed like a 20 minute long version of  ”Lucid Dreams” to a totally packed house.   They blew my mind!

Bumbershoot Seattle 2008
Originally uploaded by Crystalyn Kae

After our whirlwind trip to San Francisco, then my family reunion in Walla Walla, it was so nice to be able to squeeze in a few shows at Bumbershoot this year. My personal favs were the Black Keys and Jakob Dylan. The weather was perfect and even after all our travels, there was nothing better than to see some amazing music in our own hometown.

San Francisco Outside Lands: M. Ward // 10, 13. Yellow balloon in the Wilco Sunset

This weekend, we  took our very first overnight train trip – a full 24 hour ride to San Francisco for the Inaugural Outside Lands music festival, which was a 3-day event.  We manage to score the last teeny room in a hotel on the Haight, and each morning we’d grab breakfast & coffee and walk through Golden Gate park to the 6 -stage festival.

For me, the biggest highlight of the weekend was seeing Radiohead – who headlined Friday night. It was a difficult decision to choose them over  Beck (schedule overlap), but Thom & Co.  did not disappoint.  They began playing at twilight, and the stage was illuminated with long shards of purple glass and video screens. After patiently surviving sound snafus (it was the first concert ever played in the park: the speakers cut out for nearly half a song!) they really got the show going.  My favorite surprise of their set was hearing ” Talk Show Host”  live (from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack) which I absolutely looooove.

On Saturday I met up with one of my best girlfriends, who lives in SF now.  After witnessing the crowd-crushing madness of navigating the festival the day before, we chose to camp out early to have a good view of  Devendra Banhart, M. Ward and Regina Spektor. Then we were off to enjoy a glowing sunset with the live sountrack of Wilco.

Sunday, we took a more relaxed pace with brunch at Cha Cha Cha before making the trek into the festival.  My first pick was to see Stars, who put on a surprisingly energy-fulled set.  It also made for excellent people-watching of the bleary-eyed concert goers staggering onto the festival grounds.   Then we checked out Sharon Jones: this crowd was WAY more bumpin than the mellow crowd at the zoo earlier this month. Followed by Bon Iver and Jack Johnson.
