Moxie is a Seattle-based self-taught fiber artist who creates clever sculptures with wool: in her own words, she “likes to make wool do impossible things.” I recently took a private class at her studio to learn needle-felting.
Her organized and quirky workspace was accessorized with metal lunch boxes, doll heads and numerous felting tools that looked a bit dangerous. Moxie enthusiastically demonstrated how repeatedly punching through a bundle of wool roving with a barbed needle, will cause the fiber attach to itself. After a few minutes of ‘stabbing’ it turns from a fluffy blob to a very firm-to-the touch 3D object. It was like magic. No water, no heat, just lots of patience.
While we worked on our projects, I asked her to share a few of her favorite sites: Craftzine , Make and Meaning, and Kung Fu Grippe. She also gave me a list of her favorite musicians to listen to while crafting: Jonathan Coulton, Richard Cheese, The Who, The Tigerlilies, and the Mills Brothers.
Most excitingly, Moxie has an instructional needle-felting book coming out soon! In the meantime you can find her marvelous sculptures in gallery exhibitions, local workshops, and of course Etsy.

Update: 12/2010: The wait is over: Moxie’s book “I Felt Awesome:Tips and Tricks for 35+ Needle-Poked Projects” You can purchase your very own copy on Amazon or in Moxie’s etsy shop.

My pleated clutch is included in “The Best Recycled Leather Handbags” on GreenGrechen.com! What a treat!

“Crystalyn Kae is most well-known for her vegan handbags, but recently she’s started creating some clutches with recycled leather for $95. How amazing is this color? What a way to bring some interest to a neutral outfit…”

Author Kim Werker with her new burgundy hobo, Me, and Kim's entourage
Whew! What a whirlwind of a day! Lots of lovely customers, both new and old and I managed to squeeze in a little shopping and barter with fellow vendors. (There is a LONG list. . .more on that later!) I was also delighted to meet a few folks out there in the cyber-world in person, including my marvelous web designer Arianne of Aeolidia, the witty and wonderful Megan of NotMartha, and Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching, who purchased a one-of-a-kind Soiree Messenger!
Everything has been loaded back into our apartment and we just returned the zipcar. I am exhausted, happy and in dire need of a beer, so. . . . . . I’ll share more later!
oh and p.s. if you missed out on this show, I will be doing 2 more events in Seattle this fall:
Best of the Northwest November 13, 14, 15th at Seattle Center Exhibition Hall
Urban Craft Uprising December 5 & 6 at Seattle Center Exhibition hall

Today I discovered a feature in American Style on mixed-media sculptor John Petrey. His collection of multi-dimensional dresses with a pop – culture Americana feel, are crafted from an array of unconventional salvaged materials, including: bottle caps, playing cards, yardsticks, and roof tiles.
Sturdy and tactile, his sculptures are created by layering the recycled materials on a resin base, and attaching them with rivets. He has created over 150 different ‘dresses’, which have been sold to private collectors, hospitals, and art museums. They retail between $3200 and $15,000, so if that’s a little out of your price range, you can still get your ‘fix’ by checking out this
video or peruse the gallery his
website.

I am absolutely putting one (or six!) of Terry Graziano‘s amazing hats on my Christmas wish list. She creates hats are in vintage silhouettes that are multi-functional pieces to fit a variety of head sizes. Each of Terry’s photographs show how each designs can be worn in at least 4 different ways, and are sure to suit any shape of face, hairstyle and outfit.
In her own words:
“My hope is that you will enjoy wearing a hat that can change silhouette and mood at whim, and that this will inspire your own creativity and spark your imagination with different possibilities for expressing your individuality.”
Her hat prices range between $65 – $185 and are available in her shop on Etsy.com

Yesterday I was sent one of those email forwards, this one was on the topic of ‘Support Sears’ for the Holidays and it really got under my skin. What happened to supporting small business, artisans and not giving more money to corporations? The holiday season is right around the corner, and I am inspired to share a few of my favorite things that are available on Etsy.com “your place for all things handmade”.
In the hopes that you’ll also be inspired to make a commitment to buying handmade for the holidays, I will share some of my favorite Etsy finds this holiday season.
First up: Pamela Angus. In her own words:
“I break glass and then attempt to put some pieces back together. Ribbons, beads, bells, feathers, keys, daydreams, blood, sweat, tears and tantrums sometime get attached in the process.”
Just lovely!

I was honored to be included in the Thaw Fashion Show, which an annual fashion show and fund-raiser in Seattle featuring independent designers. Proceeds benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) to fund social services and research. this year. I donated 4 bags to their ‘Thaw Shop’.
That’s my newest Troubadour Tote in green (available on my site in August). What a great outfit!

Crystalyn Kae’s “Soirée Drawstring” bag just made my short list of must haves for fall.
It’s handmade. It’s vegan. It’s water-resistant. It’s large enough to fit a laptop. It comes with a warranty. Does it get any better?
I (personally) don’t think so.
Crystalyn Kae’s Seattle based accessories can be found on-line or at a handful of shops in town. Click here for the complete listing.

I have been lucky enough to have my designs mentioned twice in the last two weeks on the Bag Lady blog:
“I can see Crystalyn Kae going far. It won’t be long before one of her funky ribbon trimmed hobo bags appears on the arm of a celeb and then we’ll all want one. So remember kids, you saw it here first, and now is the time to snap them up before a couple of zero’s get added to the price.” Read the rest of the article here.
“Crystalyn is an ex-Liberty internee with an apparel and merchandising degree. Her signature o-ring hobo is already turning heads (shown above is the topstitched ‘foxtrot medium’ in emerald green) while her boxy shoulder bags look set to do the same (‘metier square shopper’ in port wine). If you like to be in the know before anyone else, getting your hands on one of these is so much more imaginative than buying a logo-encrusted designer piece.” Read the rest of the article here.
