needle felting with Moxie

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Moxie is a Seattle-based self-taught fiber artist who creates clever sculptures with wool: in her own words, she “likes to make wool do impossible things.”   I recently took a private class at her studio to learn needle-felting.

Her organized and quirky workspace was accessorized with  metal lunch boxes, doll heads and numerous felting tools that looked a bit dangerous.  Moxie enthusiastically demonstrated how repeatedly punching through a bundle of  wool roving with a barbed needle, will cause the fiber attach to itself.  After a few minutes of ‘stabbing’ it turns from a fluffy blob to a very firm-to-the touch 3D object.  It was like magic. No water, no heat, just lots of patience.

While we worked on our projects, I asked her to share a few of her favorite sites: Craftzine ,  Make and Meaning, and Kung Fu Grippe.  She also gave me a list of her favorite musicians to listen to while crafting: Jonathan Coulton, Richard Cheese, The Who, The Tigerlilies, and the Mills Brothers.

Most excitingly, Moxie has an instructional needle-felting book coming out soon!  In the meantime you can find  her marvelous sculptures in gallery exhibitions, local workshops, and of course Etsy.

Update: 12/2010:  The wait is over:  Moxie’s book “I Felt Awesome:Tips and Tricks for 35+ Needle-Poked Projects”  You can purchase your very own copy on Amazon or in Moxie’s etsy shop.

Whew! What a whirlwind of a day!  Lots of lovely customers, both new and old and I managed to squeeze in a little shopping and barter with fellow vendors. (There is a LONG list. . .more on that later!) I was also delighted to meet a few folks out there in the cyber-world in person,  including my marvelous web designer Arianne of Aeolidia, the witty and wonderful Megan of NotMartha, and  Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching, who purchased a one-of-a-kind Soiree Messenger!

Everything has been loaded back into our apartment and we just returned the zipcar. I am exhausted, happy and in dire need of a beer, so. . . . . . I’ll share more later!

oh and p.s. if you missed out on this show, I will be doing 2 more events in Seattle this fall:

Incredible ‘dresses’ from reclaimed materials

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Today I  discovered a feature in American Style on mixed-media sculptor John Petrey. His collection of multi-dimensional dresses with a pop – culture Americana feel, are crafted from an array of unconventional salvaged materials, including: bottle caps, playing cards, yardsticks, and roof tiles.

Sturdy and tactile, his sculptures are created by layering the recycled materials on a resin base, and attaching them with rivets. He has created over 150 different ‘dresses’, which have been sold to private collectors, hospitals, and art museums. They retail between $3200 and $15,000, so if that’s a little out of your price range, you can still get your ‘fix’ by checking out this video or peruse the gallery his website.
