the most beautiful fall in Seattle

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

The Fall rush is well underway here in Seattle, and I’m happy to say that we are busier than ever.  So busy, in fact, that I’ve run out of a few bags. (Don’t worry, I’m making more!)  On our daily walk from the post office, my husband and I take the scenic route through Woodland park or around Greenlake.

Since the bags have been selling out so quickly, I thought you might like to have a sneak peek at my stash of fabrics that will soon be turned into new bags!

p.s. Thanks to NW Source for including my Soiree bag in their roundup of “Fall’s Ultimate Accessories“.

treat yourself to a Matinee

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Functionality costumed in style, my Matinee Mini-Drawstring bag is fun to wear everyday. As you may have noticed, quantities are limited and many have already sold out, but there are several new bags for you to choose from. Get your favorite now before it is too late!

As always, Free shipping to anywhere in the USA.

Also, for those of you in the Seattle area – mark your calendar for November 12, 13, 14th as Crystalyn will have a booth set up at Best of the Northwest. We’ll also be at Urban Craft Uprising on December 4 & 5. Both events are a great chance to try on some bags and do some holiday shopping. Hope to see you there!

a weekend retreat

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Being with your spouse 24/7, it’s nice to take a little break every now and again. So this weekend Aaron stayed home to paint – and I decided hang out with my parents in rural Oregon.
Armed with a small a fully-loaded iPod and a pound of good coffee, I hopped (literally!) Amtrak to take the 6 hour train ride. I teased my parents, that this is first time in 30 years I have had them all to myself!   I felt like a kid again – playing with their cats, riding bikes and hanging out in my mom’s sewing room.

Returning home I checked on my husband, who is in the middle of doing 30 paintings in 30 days, as part of the Forgotten Works Challenge. It was fun to peek at some of his works in progress – I can’t wait to see what he comes up with!

sometimes I wish I could clone myself

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

I really did my best to relax this past 4th of July weekend, but I still caught myself frequently obsessing about all the things I need to do.  Although I have gotten better at the crazy balancing act of self-employment, I still battle moments of feeling completely overwhelmed.  My trusty clipboard list of  ”Bags to Make” next to my sewing machine has such a confusion of stars, underlines and circles, that it is hard to decide what really must be done before Urban Craft Uprising this coming weekend.

But things could be worse.  I realize I should be grateful that I am busy.  And come to think of it, this kind of pressure tends to be good for my creativity.  So here goes: By Thursday I plan to have 8 bags finished for stores in Portland, and sew 11 custom clutches for a bride. Then I need to hang tag, stuff bags and pack my display for UCU to load in on Friday.

Oh, and our 4th wedding anniversary is on Friday, too.  Yikes. Wish me luck.

come see me July 10 & 11 at Seattle’s Urban Craft Uprising!

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Well, it’s T-minus 10 days until I will be selling my bags at Urban Craft Uprising at Seattle Center!  This will be my third show at UCU, which is Seattle’s largest independent craft show, and every year it just gets better and better!   This year’s  exhibitors are more diverse and unique than ever before: including a mix of clothing, jewelry, housewares, children’s clothing, bath products and of course. . . my handbags!

Urban Craft Uprising is one of the best ways to see all of my bags in one place, and it is SO fun to get to meet all of you in person!  So please, bring a friend and come check it out next weekend!

silver hobnail heart

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I had the pleasure of meeting Shannon Miranda at Best of the Northwest and fell in love with her industrial yet organic style of jewelry.  I couldn’t resist her lovely neckace: ‘Hobnail Heart‘ and thought this pre-Valentine’s weekend would be a great time to share it with you.  Shannon is a Vancouver, WA- based artist and her jewelry can be purchased on her Etsy page.

what should you pack for your first night in a new home?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

We were determined to sleep in our new house on the first night of moving, so I planned accordingly.  Here’s what I prepared for our ‘First Night’ Survival Kit:

In my large ‘overnight’ handbag:

  • change of clothes & toothbrush, water bottles, cell phone charger, ibuprofen,

2 plastic garbage bags (the odd shape will stand out amongst the boxes) labeled “Open First”

  • sheet set
  • comforter
  • pillows
  • alarm clock/radio
  • nightlight
  • towels
  • shower curtain & hooks
  • toilet paper
  • bar of soap

Having everything together in one spot  made it simple to shower and crash out with minimal stress!

And the winner, or should I say “winners” are . . . . .

Thank you to everyone who posted their responses to the question: “What makes Crystalyn Kae different from major designer brands?”  58 (and counting) of you submitted your comments (and even a poem!) expressing why you choose to support independent designers like myself.  Since it was incredibly difficult to pick just one winner . . . I have decided to to announce two grand-prize winners, and two honorable-mention winners who will get a free clutch of their choice!

The first grand prize winner is Diane !!  Congrats, you can choose ANY bag from my website!!

As I become more informed of the practices used by the major companies, I realize that with every purchase I make, I am actually voting with my dollars. I chose to support as many ethical businesses as possible, to buy products made in the USA, to buy non-sweatshop, cruelty-free items. I happily support Crystalyn Kae. Her handbags are unique, excellent quality and fit into my way of living. Whether I send her tons of emails pertaining to a special order, or simply place an order for a bag in stock, she is always gracious, helpful, and professional. Also, I am happy to see her promoting other designers handmade work as well. If it were not for her, I would have never known about Etsy!

The second grand prize winner is Liz !!  Congrats, you can choose ANY bag from my website!!

The benefit of carrying a Crystalyn Kae handbag transcends appearance and functionality. It became about supporting an independent artist and designer And I think of her every day—because since buying my first Crystalyn Kae handbag, I haven’t carried another brand.

The result is, I’m aware—and appreciative in a way I never was before—of how many amazingly talented people are producing work and selling it through sites like Etsy. I knew they existed before I started buying Crystalyn Kae handbags, but I didn’t appreciate how great it feels to buy something handmade, by someone you can get to know personally. And now I shop from other independent designers, too! It’s about beauty, it’s about function, and it’s about community. That’s the benefit I get from carrying a Crystalyn Kae handbag.

Congratulations to Sara!  You win a clutch of your choice from my website!

I love having a bag that is unique and without labels; the only message I want to send when I carry my bag is that I have style! I also love having a bag that is made in Seattle by someone who is using their creativity to do what they love in a sustainable way. Lastly, who wouldn’t love a bag that is washable, waterproof and customizable?

Congratulations to Allie!  You win a clutch of your choice from my website!

Crystalyn truly went above and beyond for me. You would never see customer service like that from another vendor, whether they were a big name-brand label or an itty-bitty independent. But of course, it’s all about the bags, and I love mine. The quality is bar none, the lining is soft and never pills, the pockets are absolute perfection, and it is the most comfortable, easy-to-access bag I have ever carried — which is, sadly, something I cannot say about any of the other designer bags in my collection.

Thank you all again for participating in the discussion!  I love you all and appreciate your support so much!

(p.s. don’t forget that the 15% off sale with code “summertime” expires August 31. )

Win a FREE Handbag of your choice from Crystalyn Kae!

Do you own a Crystalyn Kae handbag? I would love to hear what YOU think are the benefits of carrying an independent label. What makes Crystalyn Kae different from major corporate designer brands? Is it our attention to detail and customer service? Is it because you don’t want the same logo-encrusted bag that everyone else has? Is it because you want an affordable everyday bag that is made right here in Seattle?

Please post your answer below by 9:00 PM (PST) Thursday August 27 for a chance to win the bag of your choice from Crystalyn Kae. The winner, chosen based on the excellence of their comment, will be announced on our blog the morning of Aug 28!
